Gables Tanglewood

2012
Ziegler Cooper Architects

Located a mile away from the Galleria shopping and commercial district, this project was centrally located between the Downtown Financial District and the Energy Corridor business district.

As a mixed use project, Gables Tanglewood injected high density, mid-rise apartment living with luxury amenities into an area of suburban houses and garden apartments.

I was the primary staff architect on this project starting at the beginning of Design Development through the first half of Construction Administration, when we moved to Las Vegas.

I was a staff architect in a the multifamily “Living Place” studio. My primary project was a 320 unit mid-rise apartment complex. I joined this project at the start of Design Development and produced the majority of the construction drawings. I was also the lead staff member for Construction Administration for the first half of the building process until we relocated to Las Vegas.

The renovation projects at the Wonderland of the Americas included a private nursing college, located in the lower level storage area of a defunct supermarket.

It was a complete build out of classrooms and training spaces, coordinating the limitations of the existing structure and low ceilings, with bright finishes to counterbalance the lack of natural light.

Even though the mall was in good physical condition and located at the junction of two major freeways in San Antonio, Wonderlands of the Americas was half vacant when it was rebranded it as a Hispanic themed shopping venue and medical center.

The renovation projects included a new marketplace/business incubator, a private nursing college, compiling existing condition drawings, developing lease exhibits, and a new decorative facade.

With three young children, the existing house was getting cramped. This 1,600 sf addition connected the main residence to the existing detached garage and included a master suite on the second floor, a new bedroom above the existing one story den, and a spacious family room on the first floor.

Originally a church, the existing 4,500 sf house had a grand central space but small bedrooms scattered in different parts of the house. The renovation added a second story, reorganizing the house with generous bedrooms and a sound isolated music playroom.

Located in a historic district, this 1,500 sf project received a “Houston Heights Association Community Improvement Award for Restoration.”

The client had outgrown the capacity for its existing warehouse and office space. The project included renovating and expanding the existing warehouse and completely replacing the outdated and substandard sales offices using a premanufactured metal structure with high end interior finishes.

I was the sole employee, draftsman and staff architect in a three person firm working on commercial office and retail renovations, residential remodels, and new homes. I prepared almost all of the drawings and construction documents, and assisted in schematic design, consultant coordination, and construction administration. We also worked on various illustrative master plans, developer tenant studies and calculations, and marketing materials.

Parking Garage Apartment Parks

2008
Nonya Grenader, Albert Pope, and John J. Casbarian (Thesis Committee)

The lack of housing is a signature problem in Southern California. Furthermore, relentless low rise development leaves little room for recreational parks.

This thesis explored infill densification of parking lots to address both issues, using public parking below grade, new housing above, and a public park at grade.

The design included a variety of unit types and embraced the automobile, exploring parking garage typologies to allow residents to park their cars at home.
